THE NOL 3 MEGAWATT RESEARCH ARC,

Abstract

The design and initial performance of a 3 MW electric arc air heater are discussed. This arc will be used as a heat source in a true temperature wind tunnel designed, and currently under construction, for operation at Mach numbers between 3 and 12 at supply pressures of 5 to 150 atmospheres and total energy levels up to 5300 Btu/lb. The arc heater operates on 3-phase a.c. Its components, control systems and instrumentation are described in detail. The initial performance studies were carried out using a Mach number 3 nozzle with the flow expanding into the ambient atmosphere. These tests were carried out at supply pressures up to 45 atmospheres. The highest gas energy level obtained was 7700 Btu/lb. (Author)
