AUTOMATED MANUFACTURING OF ELECTRIC DETONATORS,

Abstract

A flexible production line designed to mass produce all types of electric detonators -- both button and wire-lead type with either a carbon or wire bridge -- is in the advanced stages of development. This production line consists of three highly automated machines and includes automatic bridging, assembly, transfer, inspection and packaging operations. The universal machines are expected to produce electric detonators at less than half the cost and with higher quality, reliability and safety, and with a shorter lead time than is possible with present methods. Deciding when to stop development of new machine design ideas and recognition of the need for product redesign are two corollary problems of automation development programs which are cited as being important considerations in the timely success of such programs.
