PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF AN AC ELECTRIC ARC POWER SUPPLY,

Abstract

The performance of the power supply of the NOL 3 megawatt research arc is predicted by an analysis which represents the arc voltage as a square wave in a series circuit consisting of a voltage source, a limiting reactor, resistance of the substation, and the arc voltage. First an analysis is made assuming that only a limiting reactor is in the arc circuit. Then an analysis with both reactance and resistance present is performed. The results are in good agreement with experimental data from the arc. The need for true rms type electrical indicating instruments of wide frequency response and high accuracy is indicated.
