EFFECT OF ELECTRON SHARING ON THE INTERACTION POTENTIAL FOR A COLLISION BETWEEN A PROTON AND A HYDROGEN MOLECULE,

Abstract

Previous determinations of the potential governing the interaction of a proton and a diatomic hydrogen molecule when electron sharing occurs have been limited to the case in which the proton approaches the center of the molecule in a direction normal to its axis. Since, in most scattering calculations, the interaction potential must be averaged over all directions, this work extends the determination of the potential to the case in which the proton approaches along the axis of the molecule. The method of analysis is based on molecular orbitals consisting of linear combinations of atomic orbitals with the nuclear charge being treated as a variational parameter. (Author)
