DEVELOPMENT OF A ROCKET MOTOR FOR THE XM7 AIRCRAFT CAPSULE EJECTION CATAPULT,

Abstract

A novel side thrust rocket motor was developed for ejecting the escape capsule from high performance aircraft. A nitrocellulose base propellant charge was developed to meet the ballistic performance requirements. The rate of rise of thrust was controlled during the ignition phase so that the capsule would not be subjected to more than 250 G/sec rate of change of acceleration. This was successfully accomplished by a special grain-inhibiting technique in which the exposed surfaces were incrementally inhibited by a dip method. (Author)
