RELATIVE SHIELDING EFFECTIVENESS OF CABLES AND CONNECTORS,

Abstract

Shielding effectiveness tests were conducted on various types of 32 conductor cables. These tests were divided into two distinct classes, conductive and radiative, within the ranges of the facility capability. Where it was impractical to expose the cables to high intensity electromagnetic radiation (below 100 Gc), currents were conductively introduced into the shield; from 4 Mc up to 10 Gc, the cables were irradiated with RF energy. Data were obtained by monitoring conductor pickup with a tuned field intensity meter. It was determined that the modified Bendix JT connector, which carries the enclosing shield through the mated conn ctors via spring finger contacts, provided approximately 20 db improvement in shielding effectiveness when compared to the standard JT connector, over the entire frequency range tested. It is emphasized that the tests which were performed here highlighted the instrumentation problems in measuring RF leakage. Above 300 Mc the data from the various cables start to converge, with convergence being accentuated above 5 Gc. Inability, at this time, to evaluate the cause of data convergence masks the true shielding effectiveness of the cable assemblies above 300 Mc. (Author)
