THERMIONIC CONVERTER LIFE AND REPEATABILITY INVESTIGATION.

Abstract

The two major goals of this program are: (1) to develop a clear understading of the factors which affect the life and performance of thermionic converters through the use of adequate diagnostic tools, and (2) to acquire the technology and techniques necessary to design and fabricate experimental converters having long life and high power output on a repeatable and predictable basis. Efforts during this quarter included the final assembly of four life test setups. These life test setups are especially suited for the testing of any converter for long-sustained life as well as for cyclic life evaluation. The life test setups are also equipped with diagnostic facilities for gas sampling. A unique technique was developed for the analysis of the minute quantities of gases which evolve in a converter. The diagnostic apparatus has been successfully calibrated. Converter 401-P-2 was installed in one of the life test setups, and preparations for life testing of the converter completed. Gas sampling preparations of Converter 402-R-2 also were completed, as well as the scanner for the scanning of the first emitter. (Author)
