DEVELOPMENT OF AN ULTRASONIC TECHNIQUE FOR INSPECTING A DYNAMIC FLUID STREAM FOR FOREIGN PARTICLES.
Abstract
In order to eliminate some of the human factors in particle counting, various electrical and optical automatic counters have been developed. These methods along with microscopic counting share the limitation imposed by sample counting. This is the delay between taking the sample and obtaining a reading on that sample. The one fluid classification method which appears to be capable of instantaneously counting and sizing particles in a high volume flowing fluid is the ultrasonic counting method. A short wavetrain of ultrasonic energy is transmitted into the flowing fluid through which it travels until it strikes a particle. A portion of the energy, dependent on the size of the particle, will be reflected, detected, discriminated for size, and registered on the appropriate counter. A line cell was designed and connected to a circulating loop. Tests of this device were inconclusive; therefore the line cell was set up as a sampling cell through which 200 ml samples of fluid were pumped and counted with promising results. (Author)
