AN ERROR-RATE EXPRESSION FOR HF DPSK COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS,

Abstract

This memorandum develops an error-rate expression for binary-differential-phase-shift-keyed and quaternary-differential-phase-shift-keyed communication systems, utilizing second-order, post-detection combined space diversity and a time- and frequency-varying HF propagation medium for the transmission of information. The propagation medium output is assumed to be the sum of an additive noise and the outputs of several independent paths. Each path has a random gain, Rayleigh distributed with a known variance dependent upon the particular path; a random phase shift, uniformly distributed; a known time delay; and a known Doppler shift. The probability-of-error expression accounts for the effects of intersymbol interference, interchannel interference, frequency-selective fading, time-selective fading, and additive noise. The sensitivity of the systems to perturbations in the time delays, Doppler shifts, relative strengths, and number of paths is discussed. (Author)
