AN INVESTIGATION OF THE ROTATIONAL AND AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH ASPECT RATIO ROTORS,

Abstract

The potential applicability of autorotating shapes as self-dispersing bomblets has led to continued interest in their rotational and aerodynamic characteristics. This study was to determine the effects of the basic body dimensional geometry upon the steady-state performance characteristics, and represents only the first part of a detailed program to obtain meaningful information on this type of autorotor. In this phase of the work, it is concluded that increasing the aspect ratio increases the rotational velocity and the lift-to-drag ratio. The addition of end plates and increasing the size of the end plates improves the rotational efficiency and the lift-to-drag ratio though not in a proportionate relationship. Under steady-state conditions, the high aspect ratio rotor offers potential glide angles beyond 55 degrees off the vertical. (Author)
