PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CHEMICAL INFORMATION DATA SYSTEM.

Abstract

The University of Pennsylvania Chemical Informa tion Data Systems (CIDS) Project was inaugurated with the ultimate objective of producing an action plan for the Army CIDS program. Activities to date have consisted essentially of conducting an analytical inquiry into diverse facets of the CIDS program, with particular reference to the functional requirements of such systems. This first report is limited to a presentation of the findings resulting from this inquiry. It is highly desirable to present these findings in order that a further exchange of views may take place in the formulation of the action plan. The following subject areas are discussed; CIDS objective and scope, CIDS queries input, and output; compounds and other substances admitted to the system; structures; molecular formulas; nomenclatures, chemical and nonchemical names; linear notations; bibliographical citations; kinds of data; vocabularies; data locations; technical information centers; data processing; action plan; system executive; file organization; time-sharing supervisor; query format; automatic classification; magnetic disk storage; and magnetic tape storage.
