PREPACKED CONCRETE.

Abstract

Twenty four hardened plain concrete wallettes, each 31 in. high by 25 in. wide by 6 in. thick, were sawed into various rectangular parallelepipeds. The wallettes represented three groups of prepacked concrete: reference aggregate intruded with fresh-water grout, coral aggregate with fresh-water grout, and coral aggregate with sea-water grout. Each group consisted of three grout-mix designs: Strong, Normal Strength, and Weak. Over 400 prismatic test specimens were involved in the program for determining the effectsof: type of mixing water, type of wiremesh cover atop the wallette form, test specimen location within the wallette before sawing, and reef coral in contrast to reference aggregate which was conventional sand and gravel. Study of the test data obtained with hardened prepacked concretes show that: (1) bulk density of coral concrete, made with sea-water grout, decreases as moist-curing time is increased; (2) bulk density, Young's modulus, and volume change are unaffected by type of cover atop the wallette form; (3) the physical properties examined are not perceptibly related to the original location of the test specimen within the wallette; (4) Young's modulus of coral concrete varies more than that of reference concrete; and (5) after 8 years of room-dry storage, about 0.1 percent shrinkage is common to any group of prepacked concretes investigated, but the average weight loss coral concrete is four times as much as that of reference concrete.
