ORGANIC POLYMERS WITH SPECIFIC ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES,

Abstract

Recent work done in the USSR on the development of polymeric materials with new electric and magnetic properties is described. Polymers with systems of conjugated bonds and heteroatoms in the conjugation chain were synthesized by various investigators who reported their findings at a conference conducted by the Institute of Electrochemistry, Academy of Sciences USSR on 21-22 January 1960. Principal emphasis is on problems pertaining to the synthesis of a number of new types of polymers exhibiting a wide range of electrical and magnetic characteristics combined with a high heat resistance. Included in this group are polymers with C-C chains and conjugated bonds; polymers with conjugated bonds which contain heteroatoms and polar groups as well as complexes of these polymers with metals; and polymer chelate compounds of percyanoethylene which were synthesized exhibit high heat stability (up to 450) on the surface of metals, a considerable electrical conductivity and an activation energy of electrical conductivity in the 5-7 kcal/mole range.
