OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE EXPERIENCE OF THE HEAVY AND MEDIUM TRACTORS (CRAWLER), 20-TON CRANE, ROAD GRADER, 1.5-KW GENERATOR, AND 45-KW 400-CPS GENERATOR,
Abstract
This study was undertaken at the request of DCSLOG and is one of a series on the economics of maintenance of Army equipment. Engineer equipment continues to be of great importance to Army operations in both peace and war. The total engineer inventory includes equipment with a far greater variety of missions than that of the equipment included in this study. Opinions vary as to the changing roles of engineer equipment. For example, some feel that the ultimate in mobility, every man a self-propelled air vehicle, will eliminate the need for road construction and maintenance. However, it is usually pointed out that this vision is decades away, that the concept may not even be desirable, also that some clearing must still be done for landings and takeoffs, and so on through a lengthly list. Such deep-seated controversy is not the domain of this study. What is pertinent is that a body of equipment does exist and will continue to exist in some related form for years to come. (Author)
