OCEANOGRAPHIC REPORT NO. 4. OCEANOGRAPHIC OBSERVATIONS TROPICAL ATLANTIC OCEAN EQUALANT II. AUGUST 1963,

Abstract

EQUALANT II, sponsored by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, was the second multiple ship synoptic survey of the equatorial Atlantic waters under the International Cooperative Investigation of the Tropical Atlantic (ICITA). Its purpose was to obtain data at the peak of northern summer conditions (during August 1963). The U. S. Coast Guard cutter CASCO participated, obtaining physical, chemical, and biological oceanographic data, along the meridian of 25 W between 20 N latitude and 15 S latitude. Six stations were occupied en route to the area and a cross section of the Brazil Current was also occupied en route to Rio de Janeiro. A discussion of the methods and a tabulation of the results along with vertical sections of temperature, salinity, and bathymetry along the ship's trackline are presented in this report. (Author)
