NUCLEAR ENERGY DRIVEN LASER SYSTEMS.
Abstract
Experimental results are reported which successfully demonstrate that a mechanism exists whereby nclear energy may be advantageously employed in increasing the energy output of ruby laser systems. In a series of experiments ruby laser crystals were irradiated with judiciously chosen dosages of Co(60) gamma rays. Using a conventional pulsed system to pump the irradiated laser crystals, the energy output was found to be significantly increased with no increase in the energy input. Studies of radiationproduced center formations in crystals (an energy storing process) and the related spectral absorption bands are discussed in some detail in an attempt to correlate the observations with presently known phenomena. Also, various developments made during the past year in growing and finishing laser crystals are reported. (Author)
