THE TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF GELATIN TARGETS TO PROJECTILE IMPACTS

Abstract

Results are presented of an investigation of the transient response of gelatin targets to projectile impacts at 1.37 kilometers per second. The report has two main sections. The first describes the experimental technique used to gather transient response data for the targets, and presents and discusses the test results. The second section is devoted to development of a data reduction method through which observed particle velocity-time response for the elastic deformation of a target may be analyzed to yield load-time response. Some of the present data are reduced using this method and the indication is that a useful supplement to the observed results has been achieved.
