AN EVALUATION OF HP-150 STEEL,

Abstract

Preliminary investigations indicated that the HP-150 steel might be promising as an HY-130/150 submarine-hull steel, and therefore the Applied Research Laboratory evaluated the mechanical properties, temperability, hardenability, and welding characteristics of plate samples of HP150 steel. Base-metal evaluation of 2-in. thick plates of HP-150 steel indicated that the asreceived mechanical properties were quite good and were similar to those of 2-in. thick production plates of 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel, the steel currently being extensively evaluated by the Applied Research Laboratory as a possible HY-130/ 150 steel. Base-metal evaluations also indicated that the hardenability of the HP-150 steel is adequate for 4-in.-thick plate. However, results of a tempering study showed that the temperability of the HP-150 steel may not be satisfactory at yield strengths below 160 ksi. (Author)
