FEASIBILITY OF DEVELOPING AN HY-180/210 WELDMENT.

Abstract

Work was continued on a number of possible approaches for developing HY-180/210 base metals and filler metals. Recent extensive evaluation of various base-metal alloy systems indicates that the 12Ni-5Cr-3Mo type steels exhibit somewhat better strength and toughness than the carbon-martensitic age-hardened or the conventional quenched and tempered steels. However, before abandoning the latter two approaches, a production heat of each steel is planned to confirm the laboratory tests and for comparsion with previous production heats of the 12Ni-5Cr3Mo steel. The most promising approach to date involves special processing of conventional steels by rapid heat treatment. (Author)
