OCEANOGRAPHIC AND UNDERWATER ACOUSTICS RESEARCH.
Abstract
The work under Contract Nonr-3243 has been concerned principally with studies of internal waves. Reduction of temperature data from towed thermistors to internal wave spectra has revealed that, in general, the waves exhibit no preferred direction of travel. No dominant wavelength could be determined. Spectral energy was found to increase roughly as the square of the wavelength. Under Contract Nonr-4029, the Department participated in preparations for Cruise 43 of the R/V CHAIN to the Indian Ocean. This expedition is the first in the history of the Department to combine operational bathymetry, magnetics, gravity, seismic profiling, thermal contouring, heat flow measurement, dredging and photography in a single cruise. Extensive use is being made of the shipboard computer in processing and storing data from many of these programs. This has been made practical by advances in instrumentation and techniques for converting data into forms suitable for input to the computer, as well as by improvements in the operation of the computer itself. Advances have also been made in temperature contouring, photography, acoustic and bathymetric instrumentation, and in techniques for processing and exhibiting the data. (Author)
