RESEARCH STUDIES OF HIGH-DENSITY PLASMAS.

Abstract

An introduction to formation of a high density plasma and a brief summary of previous studies of the high density plasma are included. Theoretical considerations of scattering of laser light from a high density plasma is given. Experimental results of the production of a Q-switched laser output is also given. An analysis of time dependent ambipolar diffusion is presented. Studies of the effect of preionization on the theta pinch by use of a linear discharge were made to determine if higher electron densities and higher conductivity could be produced by earlier half cycles of the magnetic field. Spectrographic studies of the theta pinch were made in the range of 2100 to 7000 A to obtain qualitative estimate of broadening of various speccectral lines and to determine the nature of impurities present.
