FLUORESCENT ION INTERACTION.

Abstract

Study was continued on the mechanisms and effects of interactions between rare-earth ions influencing fluorescence. Work was also continued on the temperature-dependent changes in the fluorescence of manganese salts. An r-6 radial dependence for the quenching interaction between rare-earth ions in solids was definitely established. In the study of solutions, for which an r-6 radial dependence had been previously determined, preliminary results of experiments still in progress demonstrate that the strength of the quenching interaction between rare-earth ions is determined by the overlap of the emission spectrum of the active ion, and of the absorption spectrum of the quenching ion. These experimental results can be understood on the basis of the resonance transfer of energy. In other experiments, the study of the transfer of energy between rare-earth ions is being continued and expanded to include the Cr(3+) to Nd(3+) energy transfer. (Author)
