CHEMICAL STRENGTHENING OF CERAMIC MATERIALS.

Abstract

An investigation of the effect of compressive surface layers on the strength of polycrystalline ceramic bodies is described. The feasibility of chemical strengthening was demonstrated by forming low-expansion surface layers on TiO2 and Al2O3 bodies and the strengths of these composite bodies were measured. Substantial increases in the average strengths were observed and the differences in the averages between the treated samples and the controls were found to be significant in the statistical sense.
