EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENT OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC FORM FACTOR OF THE NEGATIVE PI MESON.

Abstract

The scattering of pi mesons of 21 BeV energy, incident on electrons at rest, was studied to determine the electromagnetic form factor of the pi meson. The results of an analysis of 4% of the data obtained in the experiment are consistent with a point charge model for the pi meson. The data place an upper limit on the root mean square radius due to charge structure effects and radiative effects of R = 3.3 f. This limitation on the radius is interpreted as a limitation on the absolute value of the slope of the form factor at t = 0. These data do not exclude positive slopes at the origin corresponding to an imaginary value of the radius of the same magnitude. (Author)
