COMMISSION ON EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEY.

Abstract

Progress is reported in selected areas of research of the U. S. Army Medical Unit. Metabolic studies in volunteers infected with tularemia, sandfly fever and Q fever or maintained under conditions of artificial pyrexia are discussed. Successful isolation from man of the viruses of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) and Bolivian hemorrhagic fever by means of tissue culture of the hosts' bone marrow is reported. Anthrax toxin has been purified in 3-5 days by physicochemical methods; some aspects of its antigenic characteristics are reported. Salmonella typhosa endotoxin has been intravenously infused into rabbits and man resulting in febrile and toxin responses. Three typhoid fever vaccines were given to volunteers who were subsequently challenged orally; no protection was afforded to the challenge dose. A streptomycindependent strain of S. typhosa was studied in man. Viable tularenia vaccines are effective in protecting man at the challenge doses used. A comparison of the effects of several antibiotics on Pasteurella tularensis revealed that they were bactericidal in vitro but bacteriostatic in vivo.
