TIGHTER TOLERANCE CRYSTAL UNITS.

Abstract

The development of miniaturized quartz crystal units in the frequency range of 17 mc. to 32 mc. which meet frequency tolerances compatible with single sideband communications requirements without the use of power consuming devices is described. The theory of frequency control using crystals, capacitors, coils, and thermistors is discussed and appropriate circuit impedance characteristics are derived. In addition, characteristics of a frequency adjustment network are given. Design of compensation and adjustment networks is given. Selection of appropriate components, most particularly the quartz crystals, is discussed. Instrumentation problems are discussed and the required test equipment is described in detail. Characteristics of typical units are evaluated. Use limitations, principally the oscillator - crystal interactions, are discussed. (Author)
