THE MERCURY-PHOTOSENSITIZED OXIDATION OF PERFLUOROPROPENE.

Abstract

Mixtures of C3F6 and O2 saturated with mercury vapor were irradiated with 2537 A radiation at 24 and 213 C. The products were CF2O, CF3CFO, an unidentified product, and, at 213 degrees, C2F4 and C4F8-2. The oxidation product yields were not much affected by absorbed intensity or the C3F6 pressure. However, they increased markedly with the oxygen pressure. At oxygen pressures in excess of 20 mm at room temperature, phi(CF2O) equals phi(CF3CFO) equals 0.50. However, at 213 degrees a long chain occurred and the yields became very large. The primary process is explained in the text, and the chain mechanism is discussed. (Author)
