APPARENT ERRORS IN THE MEASUREMENT OF MUTUAL CAPACITANCE ON LONGER LENGTHS OF CABLE PAIR AT 1000 CPS,

Abstract

Electrical propagation phenomena cause apparent errors in measurement of mutual capacitance for longer lengths of cable pair. Longer lengths, as herein referred to, are those between approximately 0.1 and 1 wavelength at 1000 cps. Although the existence of these effects has been well established, related data on voice frequency communication cable pairs is sparse, and details of measurement methods which can reduce the apparent errors are not well disseminated. This paper reviews the propagation phenomenon which cause errors, measurement methods which will reduce them, the magnitude of the error reduction for each measurement method, and practical limitations, considering commercially available measuring equipment.
