AN INTERFEROMETRIC INVESTIGATION OF THE NEUTRAL HYDROGEN IN GALAXIES,

Abstract

The twin-element interferometer of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory was used with an eastwest spacing of 100 feet to investigate the neutral hydrogen content in the galaxies NGC 55, NGC 300, NGC 2403, NGC 3109, NGC 4214, and NGC 4244. With the antennas tracking each galaxy, a well-defined rotation curve was derived from the interferometer phase as a function of observed frequency. Total masses were estimated by assuming rotational symmetry and fitting the results with an empirical rotation curve of the form V(r) = Ar/(1+B(3)r(3))1/2. By comparing the line profiles with those obtained elsewhere with a single antenna, preliminary estimates were made of the angular extents of the gas. (Author)
