STEELS FOR PIPING SYSTEMS WITH MAXIMUM PRESSURES OF 10,000 PSI, AND OPERATING BETWEEN-150 AND +150 F,
Abstract
This report presents the results of a survey that was made to find commercially available steels applicable for use in welded high-pressure piping systems. The systems operate at internal pressures of 3,500 to 10,000 psi and temperatures from -150 to +150 F. The steel must be capable of being welded with little or no preheat and should be satisfactory for service without a post-welding stress-relief treatment. Two steels, low-carbon 9% nickel and HY-80, will meet the requirements for this application. The low-carbon 9% nickel steel can be welded with no preheat. Weld joints in the as-welded condition have excellent low-temperature impact properties, good ductility, and tensile and yield strengths of around 95,000 psi and 60,000 psi, respectively. HY-80 steel is welded with a 200 F maximum preheat. Weld joints can be made that have tensile and yield strengths of 130,000 psi and 110,000 psi, respectively, good ductility, and good low-temperature impact strengths. Thickwalled seamless pipe made from the low-carbon 9% nickel steel pipe is commercially available. HY-80 seamless pipe must be ordered specially. (Author)
