THE EFFECT OF COLLISION ON THE GROUP REFRACTIVE INDEX OF THE IONOSPHERE.

Abstract

An expression from which the group index of refraction may be calculated when the collision frequency is small but not negligible is discussed. Various approximations are made to this expression for special cases: the quasilongitudinal, quasi-transverse, pure longitudinal, pure transverse, and field free propagation. When the collisions are neglected, then approximations reduce to well known formulae. A Maclaurin series expansion shows that the group index of refraction is independent of the first power of the collision frequency. (Author)
