INVESTIGATION OF THE OPTICAL DENSITY OF CLOUDS.

Abstract

In recent years a series of summer expeditions to different regions of the USSR (in the Arctic, European SSSR, and the Far East) have carried out measurements of basic metereological elements using airplane-laboratories. Particular attention was given to studying the physical characteristics of clouds (e. g., optical density, liquid water content, and the dimensions of cloud drops). Objective recording of cloud boundaries and the use of quick-response thermometers made possible a detailed study of the temperature field of clouds and the air layers adjacent to them. The results of summer experimental investigations of the otpical density of clouds and its variations, the relation between the optical density of clouds and liquid water content, and the features of the temperature fields of clouds noted during the investigations are presented.
