THE SLAT GRID - A NEW ELECTRON OPTICAL ELEMENT,

Abstract

A novel electron-optical element is described which is useful for shielding a region of strong electric field from a field-free region while maintaining high transparency for very slow electrons incident from the low-field side, a problem for which wire screens or grids are not satisfactory. It is shown that the fields in the transition region of this device have a focussing property. Application to an electron time-of-flight velocity selector is described. (Author)
