THE EFFECT OF IONIZING RADIATION ON PASTEURELLA TULARENSIS,

Abstract

Classical exponential survival data, characteristic of homogeneous radiosensitivity and the 'single-hit' phenomenon, were obtained when Pasteurella tularensis cells were exposed to cobalt 60 irradiation. D37 values for strains LVS (live vaccine strain) and SCHU DT (deuterium tolerant) were 6.1 and 5.6 kiloroentgens (kr), respectively, and the -k values indicated that a 17% kill occurred per kr. Exposure of SCHU DT cells from the lag, exponential, or stationary growth phases to ionizing radiation showed that the various preparations possessed similar radiosensitivity. Incorporation of deuterium oxide (D2O) into the cellular milieu of SCHU DT demonstrated that cells grown in the presence of high concentrations of deuterium oxide were more radio resistant than similar cells grown in normal medium; D37 values for cells grown in medium containing H2O or D2O were 3.0 and 4.8 kr, respectively. These results favor the direct action phenomenon of ionizing radiation damage to living cells. (Author)
