AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THIN FLUID FILMS IN FACETYPE SHAFT SEALS,

Abstract

An analytical study of thin fluid films between the sealing surfaces of face-type seals is presented for parallel, linear converging, linear diverging, and three types of parabolic faces. Equations are developed to analyze the effect of these contours on pressure profile, fluid force at seal face, film thickness, and leakage rate. Centrifugal effect of the fluid film is included in the analyses as well as elastic deformation of the sealing surface in bnth radial and axial directions. Equations are also developed for including film thickness variations in the tangential direction. Graphic comparisons of numerical solutions to the equations are presented for the various cases analyzed. (Author)
