SYNTHESIS AND POLYMERIZATION OF FLUORINATED SULFUR MODIFIED NITROSO RUBBER

Abstract

Efforts to synthesize SF4CF(NO)CF2Cl and to polymerize C2H5SNO are described. Several fluoroaromatic monomers and precursors have been prepared including 1,4-dibromotetrafluorobenzene, tetrafluoroterephthalic acid, monosilver tetrafluoroterephthalate, tetrafluoroterephthalyl mononitrite and 1, 4-diaminotetrafluorobenzene. Continued efforts to prepare SF5COOH and to synthesize SF5CF2COOH are described. Low temperature polymerization of thiocarbonyl fluoride with CF3No, CF2=CF2, and CF3NO/CF2=CF2 using a triethylborane/oxygen catalyst has been examined. Trifluoronitrosomethane and tetrafluoroethylene were polymerized with a coordination catalyst. The reactivity of CF3SCF(NO)CF2Cl is apparently low compared with CF3NO since little, if any, of this compound polymerized in the system CF3NO/CF2=CF2/ CF3SCF(NO)CF2Cl. An attempt to prepare C2H5SNO and polymerize it with CF2-CF2 in situ was not successful.
