INTRODUCTION TO COBOL PROGRAMMING,

Abstract

COBOL is a programming language specially designed for business-type applications. COBOL is described here by means of a teaching language called COBOL-1, a simplified and completely compatible subset of COBOL, that preserves the essential structure of the language, but minimizes the number of rules and options the student has to learn in the initial stage. Although written primarily for the programmer, this Memorandum also provides the data system manager or consumer with an understanding of the process involved. With minor exceptions, the material presented here also appears in the authors' book, Automatic Data-Processing Systems, Principles and Procedures, Second Edition, Wadsworth Publishing Company, Belmont, California, 1963.
