STUDY OF A FOCUSED, DECELERATING CROSSED-FIELD ELECTRON STREAM,

Abstract

In this report a focused, decelerating, crossedfield electron flow is studied. Crossed-field decelerating beams are found in regions near depressed collectors and in triode thermionic energy converters. The investigation was intended to determine if any instabilities are present in the flow and if it is possible to collect the beam at zero potential. The results of the experimental study indicate that, although the beam is poorly focused, no instabilities existed in the flow. The faulty beam optics resulted in incomplete collection of the beam. It is concluded, however, that a well-focused flow could be collected at zero potential. Previous studies, concerned with instabilities in crossedfield beams and beams in decelerating fields are summarized to suggest the type of instabilities which might be found in the present beam. An experimental crossed-field tube designed to produce a focused, decelerating beam is described. A computer analysis of the flow in the experimental tube is presented. It solves Poisson's equation and integrates the equations of motion by an iteration technique. The results of the analysis show that the flow produced by the electrode configuration is not that predicted by the design theory. The resulting flow was asymmetric, nonlaminar, and poorly focused in the collector region of the tube. (Author)
