THE CORRELATION OF ANOMALOUS ELECTRON EMISSION WITH MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF METAL AND ALLOYS.

Abstract

The investigation was aimed primarily at gaining a better understanding of the connection between lattice imperfections and delayed electron emission (Kramer Effect or Exo-Electron Emission). The first phase of the research consisted of a study of the electron emission from low-melting metals, such as tin, lead, and cadmium, during the transformation from the liquid to the solid phase. The second phase of this investigation dealt then with an attempt to establish a quantitative relationship between deformation parameters and emission rates. A third phase, reported here, was undertaken in which aluminum was deformed at sufficiently low temperatures to prevent point defects from migrating. The emission was then observed during a subsequent lowtemperature annealing cycle. The final phase of this investigation also reported here, dealt with the emission of electrons from aluminum after quenching. (Author)
