Organization and Equipment of the Infantry Rifle Squad: From Valley Forge to Road

Abstract

The infantry rifle squad has evolved over a period of several hundred years. Historically, the evolution of the infantry squad is based upon the systems of weaponry as developed and in use in a particular period of history. In the United States Army, the infantry rifle squad and its evolution falls into two distinct periods: the American Revolution to World War I; World War I to the present period of 1964.
