NEGATIVE-GRID TUBES FOR PHASED ARRAYS.

Abstract

The initial objective of this program is to produce a triode or tetrode capable of providing a cw output of 1000 watts at 50 per cent efficiency at 1300Mcs. Five L-64 triodes were built and four were available for measurement of rf performance. A transconductance of 0.5 mho has been achieved in one of them. In addition, six L-65D diodes were made for emission studies and life testing. A gain of 15db had been attained at low signal levels with a 3db bandwidth of 230Mc utilizing an L-64 triode in a double tuned circuit. This corresponds to a gain-bandwidth product of 7260Mc. The 1db bandwidth covered the range 1200 to 1375Mc. A pulsed power output of 1.4KW was obtained in a double tuned circuit flat within 1.3db across a band of 123Mc. The gain was 15.8db, corresponding to a high level gain-bandwidth product of 5000Gc. A pulsed power output of 2.8KW was obtained with an efficiency of 27 percent at a fixed frequency of 1.285Gc. As a result of modifications in material preparation procedures, a recent L-65D diode has operated for 785 hours at 1.5amp/cm sq. (Author)
