RESEARCH ON PHASE EQUILIBRIA APPROACH TO GROWTH OF DOPED SINGLE CRYSTALS OF REFRACTORY COMPOUNDS.
Abstract
This report covers research on phase equilibrium relations in the systems TiO2, GeO2-B2O3, and ZrSiO4, and on the growth of single crystals of MgTiO3. The polymorphic relations between the rutile, brookite and anatase forms of TiO2 have been investigated, and the study will form part of a Ph.D. dissertation to be submitted to the Department of Mineralogy by W. C. Beard. A tentative phase diagram for the system GeO2-B2O3 has been prepared. Studies in this system, as well as an investigation of the decomposition behavior of the mineral zircon (ZrSiO4), are to appear in a Ph.D. dissertation by W. C. Butterman. A reconnaissance study of the feasibility of producing single crystals of MgTiO3 has been carried out. Several promising methods were indicated, but limitations of time and of equipment did not permit extension of the smallscale tests to the scale required for acceptable crystal-size. (Author)
