BIOCHEMICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL FACTORS OF THE IMMUNE RESPONSE.

Abstract

The present study showed certain differences between mountain-bred and Denver-bred guinea pigs. Even though guinea pigs are relatively poor producers of precipitins, an immune response could be detectable by hemagglutination techniques. The immune response to BSA-bentonite immunization of mountain-bred guinea pigs was greater than that of the Denver-bred colony. Even though there seems to be an apparent correlation of titers to an increase in the beta-globulins in some cases, it is not possible to conclude at this time that the antibodies of interest are associated with this component, although previous studies in our laboratory showed anti-BSA antibodies present in the gamma-beta-globulin region by boundary disturbance techniques. Fractionation studies are now in progress in order to obtain more information about the immune response of animals bred at mountain altitudes. (Author)
