REACTIONS OF EXCITED NO WITH H2, CH4, AND C2H6: THE FATE OF RNO.
Abstract
Nitric oxide was photoexcited with the 2144 and 2265 A lines of a low-pressure cadmium arc. The resultant NO can react with unexcited NO or with H2, CH4, or C2H6 to produce N2 and N2O. The relative reactivities of the excited NO with NO, H2, and CH4 are in the ratio 1.00/0.32/0.86. The species RNO (HNO, CH3NO, C2H5NO) can generate N2 in a chain: RNO + 2NO yielding R + N2 + NO3, followed by: R + NO(+M) yielding RNO(+M), or be removed in a competing reaction: RNO + NO yielding RO + N20.
