OCONUS DEFOLIATION TEST PROGRAM
Abstract
This is a second semiannual report on a test program to evaluate effectiveness of aerial spray applications of chemical defoliants in vegetation representative of Southeast Asia. The interim defoliants, purple, pink and orange were applied at 3 to 5 deposit rates and volumes during the dry season, Dec-Mar. Other defoliants, desiccants and herbicides were applied at 1 or 2 rates during the late rainy season (Sep-Nov) and in the dry season (Mar). Evaluations of vegetation response to chemical treatments were made periodically. Treatments evaluated for a period of 4 to 6 months showed the following results: (1) Purple and pink gave defoliation superior to that of other chemicals tested; (2) Purple gave effective defoliation (greater than 65%) for a period of 2 to 5 months after treatment at rates of 1 or more gals/acre. Pink was effective for a similar period at rates of 1 or more gals/acre; (3) The desiccants, Diquat and cacodylic acid gave effective defoliation for a period of only 2 to 4 weeks after treatment; and (4) Dicamba amine and a mixture of Tordon and Diquat gave effective defoliation at 3 to 4 months but were in general less effective than purple or pink.
