STRUCTURES INSTRUMENTATION.

Abstract

A total of 95 channels of information were provided to secure data on pressure, acceleration, strain, and displacement. Usable information was obtained from 48 of these channels. The information which was lost was primarily that from strain gages, particularly from those strain gages nearer ground zero. These losses were attributed to electrical breakdown between the strain gages and the metal structural elements under the high potentials produced by the nuclear detonation. Copper cables used in an attempt to equalize potentials between the structures and the recorders were ineffectual. Other means must be developed to prevent these high potentials. (Author)
