SOLITARY WAVES IN RUNNING GASES,

Abstract

Solitary waves in running polytropic gases of finite or infinite height are studied. Explicit expressions for the critical speed and the solution of the solitary waves are obtained by a perturbation scheme applied to the nonlinear equations. It is found that internal waves may also be observed in a running gas, and change of wave type may occur in the medium. The results obtained are expressed in terms of simple integrals of density and velocity distributions of the medium in the state of equilibrium, and conform with solutions for liquids of constant density as special cases.
