AN ASSESSMENT OF A VISCO-INERTIAL DAMPING TREATMENT.
Abstract
An assessment is made of the effectiveness of a damping treatment consisting of a large number of small capsules each enclosing a moving mass in the form of a piston and with a fluid between the capsule and the piston providing the damping mechanism. It is shown that, for a given weight of treatment on a pinned beam, two parameters control the performance of the treatment, one of which involves a stiffness introduced between capsule and piston and the other involves the viscosity of the fluid. Optimum values of each of these parameters are shown to exist at which the damping ratio increment of the treatment is a maximum. Damping ratios of the order of 0.08 are shown to be attainable for 10% weight increase, provided that the piston is much heavier than capsule and fluid combined. This compares very favorably with conventional unconstrained layer damping treatments. (Author)
