ANALYSIS OF THERMAL GRADIENT IN SUBMERSIBLE ELECTRIC MOTORS.

Abstract

This report develops a method of predicting temperature distribution within stators of submersible electric motors. A general equation of heat transfer by conduction is applied to finite subdivisions of the stators. The method is used on two types of stators, a 15-hp random-wound unit with total end-turn encapsulation and a 50-hp form-wound unit without end-turn encapsulation. In both cases, the method was easily applied and provided results which indicate low (predicted) temperature gradients for the submersible motor stators under full-load operating conditions.
