100-KILOVOLT CERAMIC METAL THYRATRON.
Abstract
Life test runs with a three grid-three gap tube amounting to a total of 348 hours demonstrate that a minimum life of 500 hours may be well expected. A run of 123 hours duration at epy 90 kilovolt was made without a single interruption. The reservoir range increased to about 2 volt with a shift indicating possible gas clean-up. Anode take-over times are .50 to .70 microsecond for different reservoir settings; take-over time change is .030+ .010 microsecond. Anode take-over voltage is 1 KV or less; time jitter was less than .0025 microsecond. Total tube drop during conduction is 150 to 175 volt; voltage drop per gap 25+10 volt. Experience gained in the course of the construction of seven three-gap and three four-gap tubes demonstrates that the iterative-planar gap design developed for this investigation of multigrid thyratron tubes is technically feasible and provides gaps with good hold-off properties. Indications are that the 100 kilovolt level at which Specification SCL-7001/80 is aimed can be attained with a four grid-four gap electrode structure. (Author)
